Tips and Trends in Employee Benefits

As an assignment for Blogging 101 I am to write an introduction. Something about me and why I started this blog in the first place.

I started this blog to communicate more frequently with my clients and others who might have interest in tips and trends in employee benefits. I have been an insurance broker since January 2, 1996. Whew that’s a long time!! I have seen a lot of changes but none as sweeping as what we’ve experienced lately. Since it’s hard to keep up with all the stuff that’s coming at us daily from the government, our insurance carriers, TPA’s, employees and their dependents, and owners, I hope that this blog will help my front-line group administrators and/or owners.

As I said earlier I am a 18-year veteran of the health insurance wars. Just kidding it’s not all that bad (well most of the time it’s not that bad). Before insurance I worked for the American Heart Association and traveled quite extensively. Over the Thanksgiving holiday of 1995 my dad who owned an insurance agency asked me if I had any interest in the insurance business. I was unsure. I’d never pictured myself in that business even though I had worked quite a few odd jobs in his agency as a teen and when I was on holidays from college.

My dad is a charismatic man who looks a lot like Clint Eastwood. The fact that he made the offer in the first place really made me happy. I had a toddler, a sweet blue-eyed girl with beautiful brown curly hair, and the traveling with the Heart Association was taking me away from her too much so I said why not?! That was the beginning and from there it has been a very interesting ride. I worked with my dad for nearly 4 years and I told people during that time that he was the best boss I’d ever had. He truly was, he supported me from day one with training, staff, and technology. I landed three large accounts in my first few months and I was the golden child. Looking back on it, I was truly blessed with that opportunity and even though the original idea was his wife’s (my dad was kind of old school and thought women in insurance were the people who worked in support roles to the men) I began on a career that has allowed me to touch people’s lives in a positive way, make a good living and enjoy time with my family. Who could ask for more?

After leaving my dad’s agency in 2000 I went out on my own for a few months but was quickly scooped up by a large regional insurance brokerage which catapulted me into even larger accounts and I enjoyed that ride for several years until the agency was purchased by a bank and after a time the changes were swift and painful. I again decided to go it on my own and that’s where I’ve been since 2007. I now enjoy dealing with a much smaller book of business but my clients are truly my friends and I can honestly say that this is the best time of my career. I am now my best boss ever and I can be as creative as I choose in dealing with my day to day tasks of taking care of business.

I hope that this blog will be useful to someone out there and if you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see here please let me know.

Have the happiest, healthiest of days today!!
